Windows XP won't boot

I've been trying for several days to get my PC to boot to windows. I have XP
SP2 on a Dell Dimension desk top. The trouble started after installing
iTunes. It wouldn't connect to the music store (didn't think there was an
active internet connection despite the fact I've got DSL). Called Apple,
after exhausting other avenues, they had me go into the system configuration
utility and, under the startup tab, disable all but the iTunes programs. I
rebooted but then iTunes itself wouldn't startup because there were two
copies of some process (which, unfortunately, I didn't write down the name
of) running that took up 100% of the CPU. I rebooted again, but after the
Windows loading screen, it went to black and .... nothing. I tried booting
in safe mode but only got as far as loading the agpCPQ.sys file. There were
no more lights or sounds from the CPU. At that point, the Apple folks were
flumaxed and gave up.

I tried rebooting to last known good but that failed and then I tried
accessing the repair console using the original installation CD. This was an
exceedingly long process and several times the PC went to black for hours at
a time though I eventually got windows up. One thing that concerned me,
however, is that while it was trying to reload some of the system files, it
couldn't find A3d.dll. Not having a clue where a copy of that might be, I
cancelled out of the popup asking where to find it. Eventually, after
another round of the screen going black for several hours, I did get windows
up. I checked on some of my files and my overflowing email inbox before
attempting to reboot. Unfortunately, after the Windows loading screen it
went to black and stayed there.

I'm in the process of trying the repair function again (at least I
*eventually* got to Windows that way) and thought I'd try to go back to a
restore point to see if that would work. Any words of advice? Does anyone
know what this A3d.dll file is and if it could be the source of my problems?
What would cause the system to hang at the agpCPQ.sys file?

I've got an HP scanner. Thanks for the pointer. We'll see how things go
when I get home tonight (crosses fingers)....
