I am trying to setup an external hard drive to backup data on my Win XP home
SP2 descktop. The first time I pluged it in it worked fine. Ithen removed it
and has not worked again. The external HD works fine on my laptop and other
desktop.
I did update the usb drivers but it did not fix the problem.

All help is greatly appreciated!!

Does this apply to your case?
"New drive or mapped network drive not available in Windows Explorer"
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297694/en-us>

Does the Disk Manager see the drive?
Right-Click "My Computer"->Manage->Storage->Disk Management

Can you access it using a command prompt?

When I plug it in it does not show up in disk management. Add Hardware does
not work either. One thing I did notice is that one time when I plug it in
it found it but after a few minutes it said it could not support it.

I am having a similar problem. XP laptop won't show external hard
drive in My Computer. I used it once and backed up C drive on it
before sending laptop to repair. I saw the backup folder listed on
ext hard drive. Then i couldn't get any other computer to
recognize the ext hard drive (Simple Tech). this time when I
plugged in ext hard drive, pop up in bottom right corner said,
"Your new hardware is installed and ready." Yet I can't find it in
My Computer to be able to use it. Device Manager does not show it
either.

If it's doing what you say, it should at least show up in the device
manager under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section. It's
possible that it is picking up an incorrect device driver. Examine the
"Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section before and after inserting
your device to see if anything changes.

HTH,
John
