Windows XP vs Printer

Recently I purchased a new computer with Windows XP
installed. My old printer, Epson Dot Matrix Action
Printer 5000+ (Epson LQ-570e ESC/P2) prints perfectly
except that now the figures @EJL 1284.4 appear in the top
left corner of every first page. Why? And how can I get
rid of them? Any suggestions? Robert L. Hecker

If the print-out is otherwise ok, a possible cause is a mis-match between
the printer driver and the printer; the driver is sending a command sequence
to the printer that the printer does not recognise as such and is printing
it instead. Judging where the mis-printing is happening, it is probably a
printer-initialising command sequence.

I do not recognise all of the particular combination you quote; however, @
is a reset command.

By your description, I take that you are using the Epson LQ-570e ESC/P2
driver. I further surmise that your Action Printer 5000 emulates that
printer. Sometimes, to use an emulation, you have to change the setting of
some DIP switches or some front-panel settings. I am not familiar with the
printer you have so I don't know if that is needed for it. Check the printer
manual. If you don't have one, there might be one available on-line or for
download from the Epson www site. Also, in the manual, another emulation
might be suggested. If so, it would be worth trying that driver. Also worth
a shot is the driver for the Epson DFX 8000 or DFX 5000 or FX870 or FX1170
or other FX series printer. Also there is a generic Epson 24 pin driver that
would be worth checking. However, I believe a driver for the particular
printer is listed in the Add a printer wizard for Win XP. Why not use that?

A quick check suggests that the printer has DIP switches and that SW1 is to
be "off" for ESCP/2 mode.

This seems to be PCL codes incorrectly set. Are you
printing from a MS-DOS based program?
