Windows XP Upgrade

I am thinking of buying Windows XP Professional Upgrade version and I
have a question or two.

I have windows XP Home on my Compaq Laptop (which came with the
computer). Will Windows XP Professional Upgrade be a good buy? I do
have the Windows XP Home CD that came with the Computer. Should I go
with the OEM version, Upgrade, or Full version? I am trying to save
money while upgrading Versions. I do know that the OEM disk will be
bound to the first computer it is installed to and upgrade does need the
Previous owned Windows Disk. Currently Best Buy is having $20 - $30
Savings on Windows XP Pro and home, so the quicker the decision the better.

I would get the upgrade version so it be transferred to another computer.
Why do you want to upgrade to Pro? There are not many differences between
Home and Pro. Do you have a need for some of the things that Pro can do
such as join a domain, EFS encryption, IIS, Group Policy Editor or something
else?

I am upgrading to pro for the IIS functionality. I am doing some
programming and came upon a snag because it required that while
connecting to the debugger localhost.

I just want to know, Why would Pro Update be a better buy than buying
the Full Version?

another thing, When doing a Clean installation (clearing all partitions
off my hdd and installing the Upgrade, will the upgrade CD search for
"Legal Full information" or does it only prompt for the "Legal Full CD"?
Does prompting happen when making a clean install, or does it always
prompt even when Updating from home to pro?

It's much cheaper and an upgrade version can do either an upgrade or a clean
install. The only limitation is that you have to show proof of ownership of
a qualifying OS. It will ask you to insert the CD as proof. This cannot be
a recovery CD, it has to be an installation CD. If all one has is the
recovery CD, then that qualifying OS would need to be installed before the
upgrade can be done.

If you can live with the limitation of having to keep/provide the CD for the
qualifying OS, then the upgrade version is the more economical one.

Partially answered in my other response. A clean install is done by booting
from the upgrade CD, inserting the CD for the qualifying product when asked,
then continuing with the install. The qualifying OS does not have to be
installed.

For an upgrade you start it from within the qualifying OS from it's desktop
by running the CD, so it knows the OS is already installed.

You should buy the Upgrade version. The Full version costs substantially
more, and since you qualify to use the Upgrade (and it contains exactly the
same software) it's a much better buy. The Full version should not even be
considered.

No, an upgrade does not require the previous CD. It's required *only* if you
do a clean installation with the ownership, as proof of ownership.

You should do an upgrade installation; the upgrade from Home to
Professional is the easiest and most-likely successful of all possible
upgrades, since so little has to be changed.

Besides the OEM version getting tied to the first computer it's installed
on, it also can *not* do an upgrade, just a clean installation.

Moreover the Upgrade version usually cost only slightly more than an OEM
version, and is well worth the slight added expense, since it comes withoput
those restrictions

Currently Best Buy is having $20 -
$30 Savings on Windows XP Pro and home, so the quicker the decision
the better.

Over and above everything I say abouve, why do you want XP Professional? Are
you aware that XP Home and Professional are identical except that
Professional includes a few features (mostly related to security and
networking) missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would never
use these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

Also note another point, not included in any of the above: Professional
allows ten concurrent network connections, and Home only five.
