Basically we have currently 21 XP pro systems out in the field running a
dedicated piece of software with out any kind of network connection and
unless we physicaly remove them from site and bring each one back to our work
shop they will never get updated with any hot fixs all the systems have
service pack 2 installed and all are working fine do I a: wait for svc pack3
if there is one b: leave things as they are since its unlikley but not
impossible that they will be infected with anything since the systems are
securly administerd( but if any did get infected it could be embarrassing and
costly) or c: is there a way to manually update them on our routine service
visits, Is it possible to simply copy the updates out of the windows folder
on a machine in our workshop thats on broadband and is upto date and then
burn them to disk ?will they install? Thanks for any help

Download the updates as the come out and keep an updated folder with all the
updates and when you visit the site - have a CD/DVD/thumb drive/etc - with
you to plug in and install these updates.

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-may.mspx

July 2005's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms05-jul.mspx

Once you get on the page with each month's list of patches.. You can go to
the related KB articles and grab the appropriate files from there.

You can download all critical updates that have been issued
since SP2 here:

Windows Update Catalog
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp

Click on "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating
systems".
In the "Operating systems" box, scroll down to the next to last
entry, Windows XP SP2.
Hit the Search button.
Go through the "Critical Updates and Service Packs" as well as
the Recommended updates and add whichever ones you need to the
Download Basket.
Once you've finished the selection process you can go to the
Download Basket and save the files to your hard drive.
You can then burn them to a CD.
