Windows XP unable to talk to Win98

Scenario
---------
I have 2 machines one XPhome and Win98. Both connect to
internet fine through Router and Cable modem.

I believe Router assigned them IP addresses as
192.168.1.121 for WinXP and 192.168.1.120 for Win98. The
internet connections on both machines are good.

Problem
--------
The problem is the file sharing.
* I am unable to establish connection between them.
* I cannot ping either m/c's.

What I have done
-----------------
I have ran the setup wizard on both XP and 98 using the
XP CD. Have chosen the same workgroup for both. Created a
userid on 98 and did the same on XP, both userid and
passwd are same on both machines. I have the sharing
enabled on 3 drives on 98 open to all.

XP NN shows
-----------
While in XP the NN shows me the workgroup and DOES show me
the win98 machine
but when double clicking on the icon it comes with
message "//win98 is not accessible. You might not have
permission
to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of thi server to find out if you have permissions."

Both the user ids are same on both machines, folders are
shared on 98. Does not understand why I get this message.

I have also followed
---------------------
I have looked at previous threads and done the following.
1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use
only on a direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable
and un-install all other firewalls while troubleshooting.
Details here: Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

...htm
2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If
the network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and
Printer Sharing from all but one of them. Details here:
Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_pro
tocols.htm
3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all
computers. Details here: Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP
(NetBT)

etbt.htm

Make sure each machine are on the same subnet mask. If
the subnet mask is different, the computer is effectively
located on a different network. Click Start, Run and
type "cmd" (without quotes) and press ENTER. Type
ipconfig or ipconfig/all. Make sure it is something like
255.255.255.0.

If the subnet mask is different, type ipconfig/release
then type ipconfig/renew if DHCP is present. Otherwise,
you'll need to configure the subnet mask manually.

Eric, Thanks for the reply.

The subnet mask is same for both the computers
255.255.255.0. But I have read some more threads and
reminded that I have Norton AV software on the Win98 m/c.
Do you think that has firewall that is blocking it. I will
try with disabling that.

Yes, if you have a firewall that very well could be the
problem. I would configure Norton Firewall so that other
machines can access each other on the local area network
or I would disable or remove while troubleshooting. On
the other hand, if you just have Norton Antivirus there
is no built-in firewall and that would not be the
problem. Sometimes disabling personal firewalls doesn't
always work and removing them is best while
troubleshooting.

Thanks again for replying.

I don't remember if I have the firewall or not, this is
the Norton CD came with my Linksys router. I will check
that tonite. Would this impact the pinging ? I am unable
to ping either machine.
