Windows XP Taskbar notification area problem

All of a sudden my notification area has stopped hiding
unused icons and the unhide button is not there as if i
have the do not hide box checked in the properties
window, but i don't I have the hide box checked. Could
anyone shed any light on this problem and if there is a
solution.
