Windows XP startup

When booting up PC that is Windows XP, it is a HP tower,
it comes up and has a popup window that says system
shutdown, your system will automatically shut down in 1
minute and you cannot kill this process therefore the PC
keeps restarting every one minute. Someone told me I had
the blaster worm virus, but I cannot load patches on
because it keeps shutting down too quickly. How can I
stop the automatic shutdown?

You are infected with the Blaster worm virus.

To stop the rebooting/shutdowns, right click on the task bar, choose task
manager, processes tab, look for msblast.exe. Highlight it and click end
process. Then turn on the xp firewall.

To turn on the firewall: control panel, network and internet connections,
network connections, right click your connection, properties, advanced tab,
check the protect my computer box. Do this as quickly as you can once the
desktop comes up. Then visit the sites below for the removal and patch info.

Also make sure to follow the links to the Microsoft pages for the patch or
visit windows update for the patch after you remove it.

Hello Karen,

Does the error message also display anything about RPC?
If it does, then:

1) Go to Start, Run and type in "services.msc" (without the quotes).
2) When the Services console opens, double-click on Remote Procedure
Call(RPC).
3) Choose the Recovery tab.
4) Change the Action from "Restart" to "Take No Action" all 3 Failures.
5) Also Click on the Restart Options and change the minutes to 60.
6) OK all the way out.

This should get us to a point where we don't restart in a minute.

At that point, enable the Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP:

283673 HOW TO: Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=283673

Then you will want to go to Windows Update and completely update your
system.

You will also want to perform a full system scan on the machine with anti
virus software.

.
yes it is the blaster
you need to turn on the XP firewall for all network
devices and install a firewall program to try and stop
the blaster for getting in long enough to let you down
load the update
if you are on dailup this may be hard as it takes longer
to get files

To stop the reboots: Go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc. Scroll down
to Remote Procedure Call (RPC)/Recovery/First Failure/Restart the Service.

Close Windows Explorer, run the edit on line 257 which includes the prompt
for the patch once your system has been cleaned.

This script removes all variants of the W32.Blaster.Worm (original, B, C, D,
E and F) and will inform you whether or not the patch is already installed.
