Windows XP startup problem

Hi, All,

I just bought a new Dell Optiplex 745 computer. I have setup it. Everything
worked fine before I did Windows XP update and installed Symantec AntiVirus
yesterday. Yesterday, everything was fine. But today, when I turn on the
computer, it couldn’t start up. After Windows XP welcome screen up, it was
blank. The computer stuck there for a long time. I have to reboot it. Then, I
can startup to SafeMode.

By now, I used System Restore to recover to the system point which is before
I did windows XP update and installed Symantec AntiVirus. Then, it works now.

I have to do Windows XP update and install Symantec AntiVirus. But I don’t
know if I will have the problem again when I do them again. Could anybody
give me some good idea to fix the problem? Does anybody know why it happened?

Thanks in advance,

I'd suggest trying the Symantec only to see if it locks up the computer. If
not, then you know it's the Windows Update that's causing it. After that,
it's a matter of tracking down what's wrong with which program (or your
system) in order to get it to function properly.

Hi qq,

Please do *not* use Symantec for anything. Most others here will agree with
me that the two biggest resource hogs, and problematic applications are from
Symantec and McAfee.

There are many free alternatives to Symantec, and if you'd like a list, let
me know.

Hi, John,

Thank you so much for your help.

I will try to install Symantec first. If computer ok, how I do the Windows
update? I should one by one to do Windows update item, right?

Thanks a lot,

i suggest to
uninstall symantec.

it is only a trial and
you will either buy a yearly
subscription for it in 4 months or
will have to remove it.

in my review/experience:
symantec seems to always (e..c..h..o..e....),
have a hissy fitt whenever
microsoft provides updates.

however, do not use the
regular add/remove programs in
windows to fix this. "go to symantec"
and get the "exact uninstall/remove"
procedures.

As you will find
out, the program seems to leach its
tennicles deep into the
heart and brain of the o.s. and will
not get uninstalled without
taking casualties if you dont
do exactly the way symantec
sayzz...

Isnt there a how-to video
called "aliens" or something?

Best to only make changes one at a time and test a bit after each change to
make sure things are running ok. That said what version of Symantec
Anti-Virus - a Norton home product or the corporate version? If the Norton
home product version I suggest you not use that. There are many other good
programs, either low cost or free, that work better. NAV is a resource hog
and can cause problems sooner or later. For AV I suggest either Avast or
AVG (both free) or NOD32.

With windows update I recommend installing them only one or a few at a time.
If there are only a few to do, then do them singly testing in between. That
way if one causes a problem it's easier to isolate which one it was.
