Windows XP Start Up

I have Windows XP home, upon start up the Windows screen appears momentarily,
a black screen appears with only the mouse arrow which I can move around the
screen. I've rebooted with F8, only to get to a black screen with the mouse
arrow but unable to move it.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks Rock,
But I have a question before I start this process. The Windows screen does
appear for a few seconds, then the screen goes black. Do you think this
proceedure will still work? The fix mentions that the screen is black before
the Windows screen appears.
Thanks again for your help.

I can't say for sure. One other thing to check on before you do this --
did you recently remove any spyware? If so this could be a result of
that. See this link for more info:
