Windows XP start-up and shut down music

Not sure when it started, but have noticed recently my start-up and shut down
music do not play. Have check that speakers are not muted, and relevant
sounds are attributed againsts each action within the sound scheme settings,
and the relevant sound files work. Seems that the instruction to play the
sounds on both the start-up and shutdown does not activate or has gone, any
idea's?

System is a Sony Vaio laptop, with Windows XP home, SP2.

I have scanned with AVG (Latest version) for viruses, clean system!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. While not stopping the computer from
working it is annoying

What do you know, I've got the same problem. My sound works just
fine. When I test out the Windows' bootup sound, or the shutdown
sound, they play just fine in test. But for some reason, the
startup and shutdown sound effects don't activate when I turn the
computer on or off. The other Windows' sounds do work while I'm
using it. Strange.
