Windows XP start menu problem

I have a problem with XP start menu. After some time
(mostly not using the computer for a while), when I click
on start menu (classic start menu), there is no response.
But the right click still works. I can select property or
explore all users. If I select explore all users, I can
see all the start menu stuff in explorer window. I can
then start program by clicking the shortcut in the
explorer window. But the start menu is still not
responding. If I use XP style start menu, when the problem
occurs, when I click on start menu, The left side of the
start menu which contains the programs list, which is
divided into two sections, the "pinned list" (at the top)
and the Most Frequently Used (MFU) list, both list are
black out. If I try to click on all programs, there is no
reponse as well. Does anyone has the same problem and know
how to fix the problem. Thanks.
