Windows XP SP3 release?

When is Microsoft going to release the official version update of service
pack 3 for Windows XP?

When it is ready. MS never says ahead of time except for the target
quarter.

Speculation points to end of February but it's anyone's guess. They
just released a refresh build (3282) the other day so it's one step
closer to being finished. The office MS web site says 1st half of
calendar year 2008 so that means anytime between tomorrow and June
30th.

No, the Microsoft web site does *not* say "1st half of calendar year
2008." What it says is "currently planned for 1H CY2008. This date is
preliminary."

Note the words "currently planned" and "preliminary." This "first
half" is an estimate, not a promise.

Like most of us here, I expect that Microsoft will meet that estimate,
and it *will* be some time before June 30, probably well before June
30. But don't bet the farm on it. If a significant-enough issue arises
with the current test version, they could decide to delay it, without
going back on anything they have promised.

Take the broomstick outta yer ass and read the entire post before you
reply and waste our time reading what you have to say.

Vista SP1 has to release in the same time frame as WS 2008 (next month) so
it is a safe bet that XP SP3 will be afterwards.

Please tell the WHOLE group what 1H CY2008 denotes.

It means exactly what you think it means--first half of the calendar
year 2008.

Those are the not the words you've failed to understand. The words
you've failed to understand are "currently planned" and "preliminary."

When it's ready.

Well, that's a healthy change in software release policy :)

It seems to me that XP ain't broke, however,
so why be in a rush to "fix" it?

Is it going to "phone home" for "Genuine validation" every five minutes now?

Here's the current content of my "WGANotify.settings" file:

Refresh Frequency on every 14 days
Show notification for every 1 logins
DaysBeforeBuyNow Unactivated = 31
DaysBeforeBuyNow Nongenuine = 14
Server DisableAll = false
Server DisableVLKID = true
Server DisableGetSP2 = false
User ReducedReminders = false
User ReducedVLKID = false
User ReducedGetSP2 = false
BalloonInterval = 2 hours
BalloonIntervalVLKID = 24 hours
BalloonIntervalGetSP2 = 168 hours

What's this mean?

Am I under continual surveillance,
in case my Windows becomes suddenly un-genuine?
(or is it going to revert itself to being "non-genuine"
in 14 days anyway?)

Isn't it primarily, a roll up of all updates post SP2?

I recently had to do a format and clean install of XP Pro Sp2, and holy cow,
took a while to grab all the updates that have come out since. Would have
been nice to have had
a slipstreamed SP3 disc to install with at the time.

And then, I found it is better to wait a couple months after a new
service pack release. Who wants to be a guinea pig?

Do the words "mutually exclusive" mean anything to you?

Isn't it primarily, a roll up of all updates post SP2?

When a mere "roll-up" was made for Windows 2000,
it was then called a "roll-up" and not a "service pack"

For example, quoting http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891861
"Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 is not a service pack."

But perhaps this is why:
http://searchwinit.techtarget.com/news/article/0,289142,sid1_gci1102061,00.html
"Microsoft this week released a final security rollup for Windows 2000 Server,
which arrives just one day before the software platform
moves from Mainstream into Extended Support."

There was also once a non-SP "Update Rollup" for Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826939

Quoting from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=68C48DAD-BC34-40BE-8D85-6BB4F56F5110
"Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system"
[note that there is actually nothing to download yet but a "white paper"]

However, that view is contradicted by the following independent opinion:
"Microsoft: XP SP3 Does Not Support Windows XP"
http://news.softpedia.com/news/Microsoft-XP-SP3-Does-Not-Support-Windows-XP-76472.shtml

In other words, your original installation material must contain at least SP1 or SP2,
they say, before you can apply SP3 (which itself currently exists only in "beta"),
so anyone installing from an earlier "restore point" would first have toinstall
previous SPs, so it would be good to download and have on hand at least SP2
(on other media) if you anticipate any need to restore your older computer (or OS).

Another bit of "funny language" in the Microsoft pre-announcement says:

"This update also includes a small number of new functionalities,
which do not significantly change customers' experience with the operating system."

To which I add "Beware of Geeks bearing gifts" ;-)

Would you like the "beta" now?
[you may have to uninstall it later, when the real SP comes out,
or you could just keep it on hand for "emergency roll-up" use]
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936929
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsxp/bb794714
I recently had to do a format and clean install of XP Pro Sp2,
and holy cow, took a while to grab all the updates that have come out since.

It sure does; back in Windows 2000 days, any computer we plugged in,
to download even a service pack, got almost instantly infected by "Blaster"
or "Welchia" worms, before we could even finish downloading the service pack
that had contained preventive updates for those flagrant flaws ;-)
