Windows XP SP3 Prevents Other Updates

B

Bill H

Installed SP3 on a fresh XP install. Everything went fine (accounting for
the usual extreme time it takes to do this and the other BS). Now, all other
updates from Windows update will download, but not install. IE7, SP3 for
Office 03 etc.
Anyone know WTF is going on?
Thanks
Bill

I installed IE7 and Office Updates after SP3. Same thing, fresh XP install.

However I did a fresh reload, installed SP3, however I put IE7 and WMP11
in first then went to WU to get all the changes. No good reason
except I wanted to get updates for IE7 and WMP11 and SP3 all at the same
time. Office updates were after all the above.
All is working fine here.

The Cure:
Uninstall SP-3.
Install selective updates (SP3 for Office, IE7 etc)
Re-install SP3 for XP

A suggestion and question:

Why not try to go back to SP2? Is it possible, does anyone know? What
effect will it have on files/programs already on SP3???

Thanks,

Leslie

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

I also had the same problem with about 6 computers that I had installed SP3
on to test the service pack. I had used Windows Update to install SP3 and
after installation and reboot I could not get the Windows Update service to
install any other updates.

The solution I found to work was to download the SP3 file to hard drive and
then install from there.

Hope this helps,
