Windows XP Shuts Down After a USB Hub is Connected

M

Morris Penny

Operating System: Windows XP
Machine: Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop

System operates fine with a USB hub connected, provided the hub is connected
when the computer is turned on. Disconnecting the hub while the computer is
running does not cause a problem. However, reconnecting the USB hub causes
Windows to shut down. A message is displayed indicating Windows is logging
off, then it proceeds to shut down. Dell support had trouble understanding
the problem, then gave some vague suggestions about corrupt files and
rebooting in a recovery mode.

It figured to be a corrupt file(s) before contacting Dell. Can anyone help
with more specific suggestions as to identifying and correcting the problem.

Thanks

Morris

Well I guess it's a lot better than the IBM Laptops which 'kill' the
motherboard when a USB mouse [of any type] is plugged in.

I'd suggest that this is not a software issue, but hardware related.

Are you 'stopping' the USB hub before disconnecting it? There should be an
icon in the systray that will show 'Safely Remove Hardware'. Click on this
and then highlight you USB Hub and click on STOP. WHen advised, you can
unplug the device.

Good idea, almost. Scan disk files and the wireless card show up in the list
of items to stop, but not the hub.

Remember the problem is re-connecting after the hub has been disconnected.
Otherwise the hub works ok.

Hi,

Try this way:

Disconnect all USB devices including the mouse and keyboard, if any.
Go to device manager, double click the universal Serial Bus Controllers.
Uninstall the XXX USB Open(or Universal) Host contorller, Uninstall the
Enhanced Host Controller as well (for USB 2.0).
Reboot the PC and let windows search and re-install the USB drivers.
Go to device manager again and check for the USB controllers to ensure they
are working properly.
Re-connect the USB devices each at one time, make sure the USB device is
working properly before connecting the other USB device.

Hope it helps.

Peter

Morris, you can try mnoving the hub to another USB prot [if you have > one].

Some USB devices are very particular about their location on a PC: no real
reason that I can identify, but I havce seen Lexmark Printers that will not
install unless they are on the first USB port [and the only device attached
to that port].

I am now out of ideas.
