Windows xp shutdown

Hello anyone who can help. When I attempt to shut down
Windows XP I get a pop-up with the following title:
"End Program wupdater.exe"
It also has the following prompt beneath it:
"If you choose to end the program immediately, you will
lose any unsaved data. To end the program now, click End
Now."
I realise this is an executable file which affects the
shutdown process for Windows XP but cannot understand why
it has appeared and how to prevent this pop-up occurring
every time I shut down. Only when I select "End Now"
will Windows shut down.
CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE?

In addition to Will's comment, and before rebooting after running those
programs do a Start - Run - and run regedit.exe

Open to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT
\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Look in the right page for a line named Userinit
The Data should be
C:\Windows\system32\userinit.exe

If it is not, and especially if it is wpaupdater.exe, double click the
UserInit and correct it
(adjust C:\Windows if your 'windows' folder is different)
