windows xp setup

I have a problem that you might have seen before, I am trying to install
windows xp and it does all the checking and verification that needs to do,
when it gets to the part installation of windows components in the splash
window it never passes that point, I have not reformatted the drive because
there is some data that I need to recover from it, I know I could plug it
into another pc and get the info out of it but I would like to fix this issue,
but any suggestion would be welcome.

What's more important...solving this problem or getting the data off of
the drive? If I were in this situation I would stop what I was doing,
install that drive on another PC, copy the data, and then get back to
solving the problem...but then with the data safely copied you could
format the drive and the problem will go away.
