Windows XP Setup freezes more reliably than old faithful

for roughly 5 days I have been trying to install Windows XP SP2 onto my new
computer. Without fail, it freezes during the second phase of installation.
Most commonly it will lock up at the very end during the "Saving settings"
section, however it has no qualms about freezing during other portions of the
second phase. I have attempted to install Windows 2000 pro twice and was
semi-successful on the second attempt. However, the OS was extremely
unstable and prompted me to attempt installation of XP again, which continues
to not work.

I have heard about the ability to make custom install cd's that are tailored
to specific systems, if someone could assist me in learning about that or if
someone has some other suggestions, I would really appreciate it.

These are the main components of my new computer...
Mobo: Asus m2n-sli Deluxe
CPU: Athlon 64 3800+
RAM: 1GB (2x512MB) DDR2 800
HDD: 160GB Seagate 3.0GB/s SATA
GPU: ATI Radeon X1300 Pro

I am no expert. Maybe others who are will read all this and have some other
answer. But you would assume that a new computer with the attributes you
enumerate should easily load Windows XP. Logically, therefore, this suggests
a hardware problem, not something wrong with the software. A new computer
should be under guarantee. I think you would be well advised to return the
machine to the vendor and ask them for help.

New PC?
Take it back, you dont need a custom installation cd and why should you have
to try to work out which piece of HW is defective

I don't see what good a custom CD will do you until you've isolated and
repaired the defective hardware component that's causing the problem.

I built the system myself, so as for sending back and asking the "vendor" to
figure it out is not an option. I actually managed to get the XP install to
go through successfully (on about the 23rd attempt), however it is still
rather unstable. However i ran memtest86 and it passed with flying colors.
I am actually suspecting faulty drivers for the motherboard at the moment, as
the AM2 socket motherboards and processors were released last month
