I own a Dell OptiPlex GX110 with a 40gb hard drive, DVD-ROM and CD-RW
drives, and it has a PIII 700mhz processor.
Everything was working fine with my system until a few weeks ago,
when, while booting, the monitor appeared to be in sleep mode, yellow
LED and all. It turned on when the system resolution went above
800x600. There seems to be a problem with the onboard video. I
installed a PCI-Bus video card, and it seems to work fine.
After about a week, the computer began to experiance more problems:
when the computer booted, the login screen would appear, ask me for my
username, accept it, log on, and before the desktop icons / start bar
appeared, a message would pop up: "Windows Explorer has performed an
illigal operation and will be terminated". No matter what I did, it
would keep doing this.
I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows, as my data
was all backed up. The windows installation seemed to work fine.
When formatting the hard drive, i chose a normal NTFS format, and the
computer took two hours to do it. Once complete, it went to the
"copying files" phase, got to 2%, and told me that it couldn't copy a
specific file. I told it to skip, and it did this with every file it
came across.
I reformatted with an NTFS-Quick format, and the files copied across
fine.
Once the copy was completed, the computer restarted. The windows XP
screen with the blue progress bar appeared, it entered setup, and
after 20 seconds, froze. The five boxes in the bottom right corner
stopped moving, there was no progress bar on the left-center of the
screen, just "39 minutes remaining".
So i restarted, and tried to repair the install. Same problem
I have had no luck in solving my problem, if anybody can help me,
please do!
