WINDOWS XP - SET UP

Guest

I tried to re-install windows XP - the set up hangs up and gives an error
message cannot over write a file all ready in existence (I386 etc). The
Set-up closes - when I try to restart my system it only recognizes the
set-up disk - no other programs - It puts me in a loop - calls for the
set-up disk - hangs up - kicks me out - restarts computer - calls for
set-up disk - gives error message - etc etc etc.

PLEASE HELP.

Have u tried booting from A disk using a "bootable disk" and then format
machine and reinstall again?

Ron,

Is this a 'repair install' or are you attempting a 'clean install'? Can you
get to the Recovery Console?
* insert CD > restart > when asked, press any key to boot from CD
* You will then have several options to choose from

Hi Ron,

Yes you will...looks like i misunderstood the initial question i assumed it
was a new build and therefor no data on the drive. You can get into "C" drive
identify the data you need and copy it depending on how much data you have to
copy.

Otherwise if you can get to the recover console you should have an option to
reinstall windows "Over the Top".

I tried the repair install - that is what put me in the loop in the first
place - I could not get out of the loop - it started to repair - copied
files then an error message - "cannot over write existing file -i386...."
-- stopped repair kicked me out of set up -- I retstarted the computer and
it asked for set- up disk - put in set up disk and the computer went back to
"cannot over write .." - it's in a loop that I can't get out of.

DREW - tried your idea - went to repair install - gave me options -- try
to repair - enter "R" - tried that - gave me a lost of commands but did
not tell me what to do with the - such as copy, del, delete etc --

other option - install version of XP - enter - "F10" - computer went back
to "cannot over write existing file..."

Thanks.

Boot from the XP CDROM. Let it do its thing. When you get to a
screen that says Install Windows plus a couple of more options.
Choose install. The next screen should say windows has found
a Windows do you want to attempt a repair.
If this screen does not appear do not continue.

Yes I have done that -- it starts the process -- after all files are loaded
the machine says that " machine will re-boot and set up will continue" - If
there is a disk in A drive remove it. When the machine re-boots - the
install process starts from the beginning if I leave the CD Install disk in.
If I take it out the message is boot from CD - put system disk back in -
the only system disk I have is the windows install disk - I put that back in
and install starts over again. Another loop.

If I try to change settings and have the hard drive boot - nothing happens.
