Windows XP Service Pack 2 Destroyed my PC

Hmm, not too impressed with this one. Downloaded the
266Mb XP Service Pack 2 a couple of days ago. Decided to
install it this morning, one double click and practically
no other action. On reboot, well there's a surprise, my
system is trashed. It gets to the windows logo screen for
a few seconds then bsod (displayed for quarter of a
second or so so am unable to read it) followed by a
reboot. It goes into this cycle ad infinitum. Trying F8
with 'Safe', 'Last Known Good' or any other option
doesn't help. PC totally unusable. Tried a reinstall of
XP from the CD, no difference. Microsoft has destroyed my
XP installation and rendered my PC unusable.

Fortunately I had the sense to make a Ghost Backup two
days ago when I downloaded SP2, so have only lost a small
amount of work.

I won't be advising anyone to install SP2 in a hurry, not
until Microsoft get it right. I can't believe that they
can release such a damaging upgrade, with no uninstall
possibility when it f***s up your PC.

SP2 was extensively tested over a long period of time.
If your PC crashed, it was likely your system was corrupt
to begin with. A service pack will not fix a damaged system.

I figured that if the SP2 is not available in the auto-
download/update then I would rather not consider the
install.
It makes more sense to wait (impatient as I am) then to
run into something that has not been anounced with
ensurance. I would agree with anyone that says, "SP2 is
not something you want to install just yet."
I noticed that the windows update has a new look to it so
I am guessing that the update isn't too far away.

Good luck and be careful -

You do understand that you are not the entire world, right? You've run into
problems with SP2 - Doesn't mean everyone will. I've not had any problems
with SP2 final - obviously as you've had problems, that equally doesn't
apply to everyone.

Wait to see if updates are required for drivers, antivirus, etc, for your
system and then with that information in hand it may be time to try again.

SP-2 is available for everyone and has been for almost a week.
However most with Automatic Update will not start seeing SP-2 until
about 16 August.
It is simply to ease the server load to give SP-2 to various groups at
different times, FAQ 6 on this link:

Juts one poimt I would like ot take issue with.
You state
"

XP from the CD, no difference. Microsoft has destroyed my
XP installation and rendered my PC unusable.
"

If you booted from your CD and selected the option to remove the existing
installation partition and then reinstall it would have worked. A Service
Pack applied to an operating system installed on a partition of your hard
disk and not actually active , since you booted from CD, cannot prevent you
booting form your CD and deleting those partitions etc.

Please provide us with the steps to reproduce this inability to install the
OS from CD after applying SP2.

I bet he has a Prescott cpu. MS has no fix for this that
they are giving out yet. There is not even a KB for it.

Turning off the L1/L2 has helped some people boot. Ive
called the sp2 support center and was told the release on
the 16th would have a fix. Dosnt do those of us who dont
know about the problem now one good.

What is the desired result and what is done with an undesirable result?

I have this same problem on one of my computers. The other computer
updated just fine. Any suggestions?
