Temp files from failed downloads can hang in the CatRoot2 folder. In
Windows Explorer, browse to Windows\System32\CatRoot2 and delete the
files within. Don't delete the folder - just the files in it. Note
that there's a similar folder called CatRoot. Don't make changes in
that folder.
You might also turn off XP's firewall. In the Control Panel, open
Network Connections and click on your ISP. Under Network Tasks, choose
"Change settings of this connection". On the Advanced tab under
"Internet Connection Firewall", uncheck "Protect my computer and network
by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet"
check box. That turns the firewall off. Your AntiVirus should also be
off, but that's already been suggested.
You might also consider running a selective startup with only basic
services. This may not help with your download problem, but makes
problems less likely during the installation. Click on your Start
button, select Run, type msconfig on the command line and click OK.
Uncheck the "load startup items" option. On the Services page, check
"hide Microsoft Services" and uncheck any items left. Click Apply, then
Close. When your computer reboots, only the basic Microsoft drivers
will be running.
If SP1 is successfully applied, you'll have to reverse the steps listed
above to turn on the firewall and to run the Normal startup on boot.

| I have a Dell computer running Windows XP and can't
| install Service Pack 1 (Express). I can see the download
| progress "bar", and it looks like it's downloading, but
| when it gets to 1.9 MB, it still says there are 7 minutes
| download time remaining, and it never goes to
| the "install" step. When I check Installation History it
| says the installation failed.
|
| I'm not very computer-smart, so if there's someone out
| there who's had this problem and has a solution for me,
| please help.
