windows XP repair

can't find xp cd (at least right now) that came with the laptop.

getting : c0000218 reg file failure, can't load hive etc.

missing/corrupt "ugaoem.fon"

won't boot to safe mode, command prompt, etc.

Question: can I use wondows 2000 cd to repair consule to repair ?

Is there an XP Repair Utility available- download, etc.

Or am I out of luck if I cannot find the CD? I am not interested in purchasing a new copy of XP. Maybe Micorosoft should sell OS insurance policies for lost or damaged CD's.

Maybe just do away with XP and install 2000 or other OS ?

Thanks

To obtain replacement CD-ROMs or manuals,
contact the Microsoft Replacement and
Supplemental Parts Department at (800) 360-7561.

When you call for a replacement CD, you may be
asked to fax a copy of the store receipt to the
Microsoft Replacement and Supplemental Parts
Department.

I do appreciate your suggestion.

However, that dep't is only open M-Friday. No help there.

It assumes I can find my rec'pt- that may prove to be difficult but not impossible. Mostly using a lot of my time which I have little of.

Meanwhile, I cannot access my work files for my business trip tomorrow. I'm basically dead on arrival.

Bottom line, I may never be able use to XP again on this laptop. It would be nice if Microsoft offered support for customers who are and have been decade long customers. Its like saying thanks for the many thousands of dollars you have spend buying Microsoft products, but we can't help you.

So, do I take my business elswhere?

Hi benchu,
What brand laptop? HPs usually store the recovery files on a hidden
partition.

Do you have anyone available that has an OEM cd copy of XP?
If so you can run a side by side install (install a second copy of Windows
XP to a different folder such as c:\windows2) to access your files.

If you cannot find the disk or the receipt for the disk , how can they give
you a replacement not knowing if you honestly own it ? Where are you
thinking on taking "your business" ? Buy a new disk , kick yourself in the
ass if you think someone is unfair to you. Jym

Dear Jym,

I think you missed my point. I can think of thousands of items consumers buy from cars to toys where product support, repair or replacement is readily avalable from the retailer, wholesaler, distributor and manufacturer. Often times the consumer can bring the product for repair and/or replacement to a local service center . I can't do that with XP.

Take a minute and think about the number of items you have purchased in your lifetime from a retailer like Costco, or the purchase of your car. Have you ever had to return a product to a retailer / wholesaler, etc for replacement ? I bet you felt pretty good knowing they supported you and replaced or fixed the product / service for you with no questions asked ? You were recognized and maybe honored as a customer with a purchasing history. Would you have expected anything less?

You see, I have a very, very, very long history of purchasing Microsoft products.
I don't think I should have to kick myself in the head for having misplaced my XP CD. No, I am kicking myself in head for having purchased XP. Believe me, based on my experience in the last day, it is not worth the effort of owing XP .

I just won't buy it again just as I would not for some other product when the support chain (retalier, & manufacturers, ect) erects barriers to blow off the customer.

Be advised , it is against the EULA to install more than one copy of Windows
XP on the same computer.

Try again son--a SxS install is the MS recommended method of file recovery
if you call customer support since the early days of NT.

I think Rick needs to spend his time trying to help users.

Looks like he's burning his time surfing to bust Microsoft customers.

While we can all sympathise with your predicament, it seems grossly unfair
that somehow you blame MS for not supporting you in what is nothing more
than a self inflicted wound. If you are as an experienced a user as you
seem to imply, then why on earth haven't you got a backup of your Registry
that can be installed from outside of Windows? To me you only have yourself
to blame although I know it is fashionable to blame MS for these things.
