Windows XP process "system" causes 100% cpu usage

hello,

here is my problem:

i've got a windows xp machine with sp1 running (hp pavillion with
mobile amd athlon). in idle time, means when the system is booted but
there is nothing to
do, there is a cpu usage of permanently 100%. even in safe mode.

this load is produced by the process called "system" in task-manager
with PID 4. the kernel itself ( and NOT the system-idle process! ).

i've downloaded "process explorer" from www.sysinternals.com and it
shows me that kernel has to handle a lot of interrups and dpc's
(whatever dpc's are in microsoft world).

in meantime i've installed sp2 hoping to cure the machine. but also
the same
problem.

anybody who has an idea what i can do? last idea is a clean new
install of the
system, but i won't do that if there is another cure .....

thanks for answers ...

yours Uwe

hello again ...

in the meantime i'v e downloaded the sp2 support tools from microsoft.
with pstat i found out that the "system process" has a lot of threads
BUT only one thread uses all the cpu time as kernel time. it's state
is "ready". seems strange to me. futher i look at the start adress of
the thread and it begins very near to the acpi.sys driver (thread:
f774fb10 and acpi.sys: f773D...).

could ACPI be the problem after a long time of running normal ????

" ... If you answer no to any one of those then the statement ..."

and if i had answered yes to each statement ??? i'd tried everything

Then there is nothing more that can be done. Everything is everything. So if
you've done everything, it can't be fixable, eh. Bye.
