When I boot SVCHOST.EXE uses 99% of CPU. I can't do much until it stops. it
pops up occationally and runs at 99% of CPU I can't print or use applications
until it stops again. I can't fins a pattern to this. I have had this IBM
laptop for over a year, it is up to date on all WD updates and virus
protection. (i think WD was not Updating Automatically for some reason, I did
Custom today and found several, I will check tomorrow).

Any ideas? I tried the tasklist /svc and tasklist /fi "PID eq 999" but I do
not know what how to find the services listed. I looked for lanmanserver and
lanmanworkstation, can't even find then at all

From Ramesh's web site: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm

To find out more about Svchost.exe entries try Process Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and 'Show Lower
Pane' options.
(This will provide some of the detailed info you may need)
Expand the Process tree until 'Services.exe' has been expanded.
Next move the mouse cursor over the Svchost.exe process that you are
interested in.
Or expand the Svchost entry if you see a + sign to the left of Svchost
entry.
(You should now see a pop up with a list of services associated with the
Svchost.exe you chose)
Next double click on the Svchost.exe process that you are interested in.
The 'Properties' Window should now be displayed with numerous tabs
available.

try Process Explorer to see what the process hosted by svchost actually is.

I use an XP system that behaves this way at any reboot, and the culprit
turned out to be the DNS client.
