Windows XP Pro SP2 kills network connections

Steve

I just installed XP SP2 on a Dell Latitude notebook.
Installation went without a hitch. No error messages.
However, SP2 killed my network connections. I can ping
the Latitude from other computers on my small peer
network, but all attempts to ping other machines from the
notebook time out. When I uninstalled SP2, networking
functionality returned to normal. I then reinstalled it
and encountered the same problem.

I've spent the better part of an evening trying to
diagnose the problem and I'm stumped. Any suggestions
would be much appreciated.

Have you added File & Printer Sharing to the exceptions on the XP Firewall
settings?

Steve,

I'm still experimenting with the new firewall myself, but the
first thing I'd try is to open the firewall settings in Control
Panel, click on the third tab, Advanced, and remove the check
mark from your LAN connection, so your firewall doesn't block
local traffic.

If that's not enough, please reply again. I'd like to know what
works for you. You can try to allow a general exemption for File
and Printer Sharing, but actually you want that only inside your
LAN, not generally.

As to pinging, there are several ICMP settings in the firewall,
and I'm not yet entirely sure which one you need to enable, but
you could experiment a bit. I would hope though, that the LAN
connection exemption already solves this problem as well.

Yes, I have File and Printer Sharing checked in the
Exceptions Panel and I still can't access the internet or
ping another pc on the network.

Hans-Georg,

Thanks for the suggestions. I removed the check mark from
the LAN connection, but still couldn't get out. Next, I
set the firewall to allow all ICMP requests, whatever they
are, but I still couldn't ping another machine. However,
I can ping the laptop in question from another computer.
Finally, I turned off SP2's firewall, but still no luck.

I'm beginning to think that the best idea would be to give
up on SP2 for a month or so when, hopefully, the bugs will
have been worked out.

I have the same problem. I have XP Home, on a home built pc. Before
installing SP2 I disabled my CA Firewall and took it out of startup. I
installed SP2 and I can't get to the network. I disabled the SP2 Firewall
and still can't get anywere. I can ping the loopback 127.0.0.1 address but
can't ping my own interface (I get a ping transmitt error 65 - Can't find any
info on the error). External machines can ping my interface OK. Dial Up
Networking has the same problem. I can get DHCP info. OK. (Yes, this is the
released version of SP2).
