Windows XP PC crashes spontaneously

My Windows XP PC crashes spontaneously. Pc can be on for 1 min to 1 week
before this occurs. It does not re-boot, just shuts down, similar to someone
switching the power source off.

I have swapped out the following components:
Motherboard
Power supply
Memory
I have conducted a memory check and zeroed out my hard drive.

I have run virus checks with MacAfee and Norton utilities.
I have run Spy ware checks with MS spy ware and Spybot.
No event logs (eventvwr.msc) have shown errors.
Automatically Restart under System Failure has been deactivated

You have Automatic Restart on Failure deactivated, have you reset this
or was it like this before the problem started?

Sudden hardware related power downs are usually either memory, power
supply or overheating but there is one other obvious but easilly
overlooked possible culprit.

I had the same symptoms once - drove me bloody crazy - checked
everything you did, eventually changed the entire computer and had the
same problem???

Only thing not changed was the power supply cable, live lead was loose
and every time I moved wrong it did a reset.

Could be heat related. Not necessarily the processor, although that's most
likely. Could be just about any component running hot or beginning to fail.
I saw that same problem with a bad hard drive. Oddly enough, it tested good,
but once I changed it, the computer stopped dying randomly.

It could also be bad power from the wall. Power brownouts can be so slight
that you never notice the lights dimming, but some devices can shut down or
restart.

Have you checked the event viewer to see if it's indicating anything at the
time it's shutting down.

You have to find out the cause.
Open Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer.

Regarding 'It does not reboot...'

I deactivated the Automatic Restart myself.
My only guess left is the CPU.
It only takes a few min sometimes to shutdown, ai cant imagine 100F is
overheating...

I am having the same problem of windows xp shutting down automatically. It
happens after I have used the computer for few hours than windows shut down
automatically. If I turn on computer immidiatally windows shut down within
few mins. I have to wait for few hours before my computer can stay on for
more than 30 mins. Do you guys think my computer getting over heated? Also
under what heading in "Event Viewer" should I check for problems since there
are total of 4. Thanks a lot.

Hi
You most certainly have a overheating problem
Look here for a download of Motherboard Monitor v5.3.7

Open the case, blow out the dust, check the fans to see if they are
working. Download a utility to monitor the motherboard and cpu
temperatures. .
