I want to create a "clean" installation of Win XP Home on a new hard drive,
whilst at the same time keeping my existing active version. I have created a
new 2Gb partition on the new drive and now I want to install XP - how do I do
this? At what point will setup allow me to specify the target partition for
the new installation as obviously I don't want to overwrite my existing c:
drive...???

One way to do this is to use a free microsoft product: Virtual PC.

My o/s is XP Pro, and I run XP Home under Virtual PC.

There is an issue with your license if you plan on keeping the o/s
installed. Check C:\WINDOWS\system32\eula.txt. "...one copy on a single
machine..." !?!?!! However, to practice installing or any other procedure
without impacting your system, try Virtual PC.

You can get help at the Virtual PC for Windows forum.

MS says 1.5 GB minimum to install XP but that is only if you don't want
any apps. 2GB will fill up in the blink of an eye if actually using XP.
I started with 16 GB three years ago and had to enlarge along the way,
my everyday XP install has grown to a 28 GB partition. Sure, I could
prune but I have plenty of room and the need for what is installed.
