Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

Nate

Ok, I have a question that one of you might be able to clear up for me.

I have a dell computer that came with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

I use the shortcut winkey+pause|break and it shows that I have windows XP
Media Center Edition 2002 SP2.

The reinstall disk that cam with the computer also says 2005, though it
installs 2002 sp2.

Can someone tell me why its advertised as 2005, but I only get 2002? also
have a friend with this issue, brand new computer advertised as 2005 but has
2002.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

What you're seeing in System Properties is your Windows XP version
information and as such is correct.

To see your Media Center Edition version start Media Center and click
Settings> General> About Media Center> Software Version.

It shows in Media Center that its 2005, and I understand everything in that,
but I am still confused about one thing..

If I have 2005, why am I not able to get WMP11 beta?
(and if its only the media center that is 2005, why does dell advertise that
the OS is WinXP MCE2005?)

Probably because you have not installed Update Rollup 2 for Media Center
2005. See the minimum system requirements for WMP 11 Beta @
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/readme.aspx#Minimumsystemrequirements

( a word of caution, MCE has been known to be finicky about it's codecs and
media player associations. If you intend to use this machine for it's PVR
capabilities, especially burning recorded television to DVD I personally
would advise against installing Beta software, especially media players)

| (and if its only the media center that is 2005, why does dell advertise
that
| the OS is WinXP MCE2005?)

Because this is Microsoft's way of confusing the consumer. (why do you click
the start button to stop the computer?) :)

You got exactly what you paid for. It has nothing to do with Dell (or HP,
Sony, Gateway, eMachine et. al...) who all advertise the product the way
Microsoft markets it.

That "Media Center Edition" is an operating system is something of a
misnomer. Essentially it is Windows XP Professional with the Media Center
components added. You're far from the first person to have been confused by
this apparent inconsistency.

For future reference media Center Edition questions are probably better
addressed in;
