windows xp machine on network disables browsing throughout network

An XP machine on my network is disabling all network browsing throughout the
network. Once it is plugged in no computers are able to browse the network
neighborhood. Once the machine is unplugged from the network however
browsing throughout the network is restored. What could be causing this
behavior?

For some reason it appears the XP box tries to take over the master browser
role. To prevent this stop and disable the Computer Browser service on the
XP box.

But won't that prevent the XP box from browsing the network?

No, it won't. it will only prevent it from participating in browser
elections.
