Windows XP logon/logoff loop

Tom

Hello I have a windows xp home edition on my pc.

When I try to log on (any account) it shows me a blank yes/no popup
(no title and no message). When I click any button it logs me out
directly after. I never get to the desktop.

I already tried the blazefind soluton
(http://rickrogers.org/fixes.htm#Blazefind); but this didn't help.I
tried to use the ssytem restore to last week, no go. Ran stinger, a²
and other anti-spyware programs.

The only way I can login is in safe mode or in safe mode with command
prompt.
When I choose safe mode with network support or a normal boot I have
this problem. I then tried to disable all my network adapters since
they could be the problem, but no solution.

Anyone got another idea? Thanks...

If you're able to login from Safe Mode, then the problem is not related to incorrect Userinit settings. Get a copy of Autoruns from www.sysinternals.com and disable the startup applications and isolate the problem. Note that the latest version of Autoruns supports editing the startup of another user profile.

I'm sorry to say that this didn't help. I disabled all startup stuff but
still the blank popup box.

I was wondering what the difference was between safe mode and saf mode with
networking option. With the first I can login to my account the latter gives
me the box.

Any one got another idea?

I have inspected the eventvwr logs on the pc. I have now come to the
conclusion that the grace period for activation has expired.

After checking with my friend (as this is his computer), he confirmed that
he was getting popups to activate the copy. This popup box resembles the one
i get at logon time, ie a yes/no prompt. Except that in my case there is no
text and no matter which choice i make it logs out. Is this normal behavior
on an expired windows xp system?

If he now buys a copy of xp, will he be able to upgrade (or repair) this
version without losing his personal files and settings?

Tom,

Repair installation preserves the user data, but I would still advice you take a backup of your personal files. Repair install guide available here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
