windows xp login password problems

i have recently encountered a problem on two different computers recently
where i put in my password to get back into windows ( XP home or pro ) after
some time and having done so the password login screen doesnt clear ( even
though i have correctly entered my password ) . the only way i can get into
either pc is to press control alt and delete .
this has only just recently begun to happen and my pc's are not new .
any suggestions please

The very same things has happened to my desktop also. I performed a clean
install and after a few days the same thing happens. I hope someone will
post a solution to this problem.
