Windows XP Login Password often does not work

OK, this problem is serious enough that I have
temporarily disabled my login password to my laptop so
that I can actually use it.

What happens is that, if I have the user login password
enabled on Windows XP, I must type it 20-30 times over
and over, (maybe even more) before it lets me in...
otherwise it keeps giving me the incorrect password
message.

This problem seems to occur more often when I come out of
Hibernation and restarting seems to help.

Any assistance would be appreciated, as I dont feel safe
not having a login password for Windows XP on my laptop.

Normally I would suggest a different password.
In this case try a different password with different characters.
It sounds like an equipment issue.
Assuming you are using the correct case on all characters.

Yes, definitely using the correct case (all lower case).
The password was a combination of letters and numbers;
I'll try using all letters to see if the problem still
occurs.
FYI, I am using an HP Pavillion ze4300.
