Windows XP Login Freeze

D

Don

Once I get to the welcome screen and choose the account and key in password
it changes to 'Loading your personal settings...' and then freezes. The disk
sounds like it is doing a seek without success as it is the same noise
repeted with a couple of second delay.

I have managed to login in Safe Mode and Restored to an earlier date but
this makes no difference. Likewise I have set up a new account and it also
freezes (with or without password)

Any ideas please?

Check the System and Applications logs for warnings and error logs for a
boot when you were not accessing in Safe Mode. Post copies here.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Thanks Gerry,

I am currently running an NSS Scan on that computer and will do that once
finished.

A quick look at System Log shows numerous error reports complaining of a bad
block - may be the cause. once NSS is finished I will try to run chkdsk /f
although yesterday it would not allow me to run it as it did not have
exclusive access??

Another way to investigate your hard drive is to use HD Tune.

Try HD Tune only gives information and does not fix any
problems.

Download and run it and see what it turns up. You want HD Tune
(freeware) version 2.55 not HD Tune Pro (not Freeware) version 3.00.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,

Hd Tune showed 1.4% bad blocks. All Health items were OK.

I can only assume that it is something to do with the bad blocks. I tried
running Chkdsk /f but it said it couldnt because it did not have exclusive
access. I am now going to Defragment the drive to see if that shifts data
around and allows me in.

Yesterday I created a new account and that couldn't login either - no
problem in Safe Mode??

Sounds like something that is normally loaded but not in Safe Mode may have
become corrupt??

Don
