Windows XP locks up as it enters standby mode

I have a 4-year old P3 computer that has worked fine for years running
Windows XP. I recently removed a 2nd hard drive that was about to die
(made a loud whining noise). Windows XP now locks up when it enters
standby mode. The screen says preparing to standby and then the
computer locks. This happens if I manually enter standby mode as well
as automatically (power management).
I am not sure if this problem is related to removing the 2nd drive. I
checked the bios settings and everything seems to be fine. Perhaps its
a software related problem. I did a virus check, nothing came up. Can
anyone offer some additional suggestions to try? Thanks

You might have installed programs in your second hard drive that are being
invoked trying to enter standby mode. Might be a little late to reroute
attention to the only hard drive by uninstalling software at the second one.

Someday, you will be forced to replace the one that you have, installing XP
on the newest one and copying files, not programs (these must come from
CDs), from the older ones.
