Windows XP installation

I must begin by saying that I know the basics of computer
use. I just installed Windows XP. However, my speakers
no longer work AT ALL (mute is not on), and my DVD driver
does not work (it can read the DVD, but won't play it).
It says that I need a DVD Decoder, so I ordered one from
PanicWare.
I assume that will take care of the DVD problem, but the
sound is frustrating.
Thanks for any help.

If the DVD ROM played DVDs before you obviously had the decoding software
installed... probably either PowerDVD or WinDVD. It was purely a matter of
reinstalling it.

As regards the sound, is the soundcard or onboard soundchip installed
correctly and showing up in the Device Manager? Have you downloaded the
correct drivers either from the website of the motherboard manufacturer if
onboard sound, the soundcard manufacturer's website or the PC manufacturer's
website?
