comfortable with Win XP. So i was wondering if i tried to overwrite vista
with a new XP install would i have any problems? Also if that isnt going 2
work then what would b the best way to get vista out and win xp in?

You need to do a normal clean installation of XP (which causes the
loss of everything on the drive, so back up anything you need first).

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if
necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

I think your making a big mistake and would try to talk your wife into
getting used to Vista, it's not going away and is here to stay. It's much
less of a transition than it was going to XP from 98 or ME.

Please, in the future write in ordinary English. I find those kind of
chat room abbreviations very difficult to read, and normally don't
even bother responding to posts like this.

But no, you don't need to delete anything first. When you do a clean
installation as described below, it formats the drive for you, thus
deleting everything.

How to get into your BIOS depends, not on Windows, but on what
motherboard/BIOS you have. As a matter of fact, you have to access the
BIOS before Windows even starts to boot. One common way is to press
the Del key when you first power on, but that's not necessarily right
for your computer. Watch the screen carefully when you first boot;
there's often a message there telling you what to do. If not, check
your system documentation or check with your vendor.

Also look here: http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm Or
just try the Del key. There's a good chance that's correct for you.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

Roy;
To add a little to what has already been said...
Verify there are drivers for all your laptop drivers.
It is possible some Windows XP drivers are not available.

Also the chat room abbreviations make it difficult to read so many
will skip posts such as yours.

What is the make and model number of your wife's laptop? Before you make
your decision to wipe off Vista and install XP, you need to determine if
there are XP drivers that would support the install.

I think you'll be okay. A preliminary Web search yielded:

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/integrated-xp.html
"CatalystT 7.7 Display Driver for Windows XP Professional/Home Edition -
Motherboard/IGP Drivers"

But before you dive into this, you should post to:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/

....specifically, the Acer section:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?s=4c9723fffe55dab5b8ba9a30f69ee5b2&f=22

Also, do you already have a usable XP installation disk?

And keep in mind that downgrading to XP voids your PC's warranty (which
is absolutely ridiculous, if you ask me). Before you do anything, make
sure you use Acer's utility to created a recovery DVD.

Ok i'll be crossing over to the laptop forum to see how things will work out.
I did'nt even consider that the warrenty would be voided by uninstalling
vists :-( so i might have to reconsider for a while... Thanks for all your
effort..
