Windows Xp home - slow to logoff and shut Down

J

john

My computer is new Pentium 4. 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM. Logitech keyboard and
mouse.
Current software installed;
Office 2003
Norton Anti ViruXP Home SP2.

Shut down can be immmediate or takes up to 2 minutes. When shut down
is slow Contrl-Alt-Del does not produce any End Task pop up.

Any suggestions

John,
Probably not an application that's hanging, so task manager doesn't ask to
'End Task'. Could be a 'service' that's still running. When logging off,
note the time on your system clock. Log back in. You might get a hint to
which one by clicking Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Event
Viewer. Select 'System' on left side pane, note any errors or warnings on
the right side pane. Also select 'Applications' and look for the same errors
& warnings.

Mine used to be like that. It may be coincidence but it shuts down much
faster since I dumped Norton, although I had Norton for AV and Firewall and
replaced them with AVG and Zonealarm.

It may be related to page file clearing at shutdown
( reg tweak will fix )

Also an application you can get named "User Profile Clean Up"
may help the hanging up at shut down
