Windows XP Home Install fails

OK, I'm dumb. Had Windows ME on two-year-old machine with 30 Gig WD HD.
Attempted clean install of new Windows XP Home OEM. Using long version of
NTFS format hung at 65% complete every time. Short versions of FAT and NTFS
seemed to work, but Windows CD was unable to write numerous files to folder
before actually beginning install process itself. Using "ESC" key to bypass
uninstalled files finally produced blue screen with strong warning about
damage to my computer and suggestions to contact my Windows vendor, etc, etc,
etc. Am I doomed?

It seems like you have some sort of disk corruption.

Boot off the CD to the recovery console and run chkdsk /p
