Windows XP Home Edition - Install

T

Ted Bobic

I will be installing Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade on a brand new
computer.

I also have all previous versions of Windows Upgrades all the way back to
the original Windows 3.1 on diskette.

I have Windows ME Upgrade, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows 98 Upgrade and
Windows 95 Upgrade.

How far back do I need to have available to install on a new computer.

Hi Ted,

You only need one prior version of Windows to qualify, you can use any of
these: W95, W98, W98SE, or WME.

Here you go:

I assume you know that there will be no problem installing an upgrade
version on a clean hard drive; the installation will ask for qualifying
media early on. You just put in the cd for your older os and go from
there.

What? No DOS floppies? You're screwed, dude.

Naw, just kiddin' ya. All you need is one CD with a genuine
Microsoft OS on it. Your W98 SE disk should do fine. That's if
you're installing to a blank, formatted drive. If you've already
got a version of Windows on the computer, that should work without
the need for a Windows CD.

Ha. I almost sound as if I know what I'm talking about, don't I?

Any of those will do as 'evidence' for a clean install of XP, provided
they are 'retail' CDs with a Win9? folder of .cab files, and not a
'recovery' OEM one. Of them I would suggest Win98 SE as the most useful
if you want to keep a 'second string' system around for the moment;
though you would need the 95 or original 98 CD as 'evidence' if you
wanted to install *that*
