If this device is a USB device, is the device plugged into your computer
directly or through a hub? If you are using a hub, I'd recommend you connect
the printer into your computer directly and try that.
When you go to Device Manager, does the device show up there? If it does,
your computer is seeing the device as connected to your computer. If it
doesn't, try another USB cable.
Who is reporting the connection error? XP or the printer?
If it is XP, it could be your computer is spooling faster to your printer
than it can print or respond to your computer. If you left it alone, does
the message on XP go away on its own eventually? If it bugs ya, you might
try changing the spooler options under the Printer Properties under the
Advanced tab. Here you can experiment with your spooler options.
