Windows XP hangs when nvidia nforce 2 ata controller used

I just spent 2 days slowly reloading a system until I found this one,
so I thought I'd share it with y'all.

Symptom:

When my DVD burner (apparently doesn't matter about make and model, for
this happened with two different ones) was connected to my system
(Windows XP sp 2), it would hang immediately, hang partway through the
boot or (if I was lucky) boot completely. If I disconnected the DVD
burner, then everything worked.

Examples:

Booted (in safe mode) to MUP.sys and hung
Booted (in safe mode) to nvagp.sys and hung
Instant black screen
Booted to windows intro screen, then hung with progress bar stopped
It would sometimes take forever on shut down

Resolution:

I have an ABIT NF7 board with nForce drivers. I have the nvidia nforce
2 ata controller loaded for my IDE controller. When I used instead the
generic IDE controller in XP, my problems went away.

I hope someone else finds this useful . . . it was killing me :)

Actually, the process I took towards discovering this issue involved
installing xp from scratch, and then performing each driver, service
pack and patch install (for the most part) one-by-one. In doing this I
used the latest drivers from the nVidia site (5.10, if I recall?). So,
based on my experience the problem still very much exists, though I
could not say why beyond what I originally wrote.
