Windows XP Fax Services Does Will not install

B

Benedictum

I tried installing the fax console and followed the ff advise:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/crawford_02october21.mspx

I also tried this thru the install fax service in Printer and Faxes link. It
asked me for a WinXPPro SP2 CD. My original CD is an OEM with SP2 but it
would not install either. I tried the additional components install using
the CD but no dice. Any other option?

(Please note: This was posted on the XP help NG. I am moving the thread here
as this NG seems more appropriate. Sorry...)

Without knowing what exactly happens when you attempt to intall the Fax
service, the best I can suggest is this page:

2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files?

When I was installing the fax service, I could see on the printer control
panel that the fax service icon is being installed. This happens very
quickly and the icon would then disappear and no fax service is installed.
Man, this is weird. I hope the Microsoft people can get on top of this.

About all I can suggest at this point is the Hotfix listed in article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

and/or using the Esentutl application to attempt to repair the database:

"The second link did the job! However, there is still the glitch. The
installation will look for the first file. One must highlight the file on
the CD and continue. It will look for the next file, highlight the file then
continue.

I hope you don't mind me hijacking the tread. I have a similar problem
but in trying to follow the advice from the above link, it directs me to
"Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor, which is in the system folder" however it
does not appear to me in my system folder.

Any ideas there. I am showing hidden and system files, but I can't find
it. Do you know what the actual file name is?
