windows xp desktop

I am using Toshiba Satellite laptop with Windows XP Home.
When I turned on 2 days ago the desktop background
appeared but no icons or task bar. The mouse pointer was
there and would move but right or left clicking had no
effect. Ctrl - alt - del got the task manager but all I
could do was shut down. Can anybody help?

First, try booting to safe mode. During the POST, press F8. If you
can startup OK in safe mode you can probably fix whatever is causing
the problem. If you can't start in safe mode.....

Hope you made backups prior to this happening. Use your Toshiba
restore disks to repair XP Home. NOTE: You will lose all your data
as the restore disks will reset everything back to factory shipping.
You also might want to give Toshiba tech support a call since they
have a toll free number. Their tech support is not exactly stellar,
but you might just run across a sharp tech. Good luck.
