Windows XP continues to re-boot says ntfs.sys file missing or corrupted from C:windows\sys32\drivers

Good morning;
I am having a problem wth one of my hard drives. I am running windows XP pro
with sp2 and two hard drives. First is ide master ata with xp sp1

The second is Sata master with xp sp2. The Sata is the primary drive I use
mostly. When I open the windows sata, it takes me directly to the screen
where you have the options to boot in safe mode, last known good config, or
normally. Choosing any one of these except for last known good config,
reboots me to the same place. When I choose last known good config, I
receive message that c:\windows\sys32\drivers\ntfs.sys file is either
missing or corrupted, and to use restore from the windows cd. I checked and
ntfs.sys is there. I tried the restore from the cd, but it does not restore.
It only takes me into the drive, which is now recognized as G drive.
I am leary of doing an auto restore because I had problems with two previous
laptop drives using this method. Since I have sp2, and the windows cd
original version without sp2, it seems to hange up.

Do I have a virus and is there a patch, or do I have no alternative but to
do a clean install.

Part 2

I can still get to the drive when I boot into my ide ata drive, but
documents and setting access is denied. I need to salvage 8 mb of files from
the sata drives documents and settings before I attempt a clean install.

Any suggestions, preferrably on 1. If I have know solution on 1 then part 2
suggestions would be most helpful. I do recall at work a couple of months
ago, we encountered a virus which continued to reboot windows. There was a
fix for this but I can't remnember what it was , or where to find it.

Regards
Phil

Error says missing or "Corrupt".

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, replace the missing or corrupted Ntfs.sys file:1.
Use the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD to restart your
computer.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to select the To
repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R option.
3. Type the number of the Windows installation that you want to access from
the Recovery Console, and then press ENTER.
4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted, and then press
ENTER. If no administrator password exists, just press ENTER.
5. At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after
each command):
cd \windows\system32\drivers

ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old
Note This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the
Ntfs.sys file is not found, the file is missing.
6. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers
Where cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows
XP CD, and drive is the drive where you installed Windows XP.
7. Remove the Windows XP CD from your CD-ROM drive, type quit at a command
prompt, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console.
8. Restart the computer.

Hi,

If you have lost some data that makes loading impossible you can try
recovering it using Uneraser (DOS restore utility). It worked for me
once in a simmilar situation and really helped me. It's restore
algorithm is powerful indeed.
