Windows XP and very slow network browsing to Windows 2000 Server

Windows XP PCs on our network all experience poor network performance
when reading, or particularly writing data on to our Windows 2000
Server PC. I've recently added four more XP PCs, and despite being
very high spec machines, the network performance is again very poor.
The symptoms are simple - very slow data writing (and only average
reading), and constant problems deleting files. Frequently, attempt to
delete files are met with a "Cannot delete file, it is in use or read
only" error. This can be very annoying, as it can take as long as 2-3
minutes to give this error. Repeated attempts sometimes helps, the
file eventually being deleted on the fifth attempt, but often it just
won't budge, forcing me to delete it from the server.

This problem is not present of near identical computers running
Windows 2000. Is there an obvious reason for this? Is there an easy
fix?

Marina,

Thanks for the info i looked at the MS links. But it refers to SMB
signing. What is it as I don't think I use it. How do you tell?
