Windows XP and Anti-Virus + Firewall

D

--Doug Johnson--

My Norton expired and I went to buy the new Norton
Internet Security 2004 and found that it's performance was
very displeaseing. I have now returned the product to get
my money back.

However, I have used Norton all my life, and so I am
unfamiliar with some of the other products out there.

I would like to know your opinions about other Anti-virus
+ Firewall products running on Windows XP Pro (SP1). I am
mainly concerned about stability, because that was the
main issue with my last Norton Product.

Thanks in advance

I run Norton's on 2 of my boxes and Mcafee on the other 2. I like them both
and they both seem to function similarly as far as setting up regular
updates etc...
So my recommendation if you don't like Norton 2004 is check out Mcafee

AVG
www.grisoft.com get the free version, 6.0

I been using it for years. Yes, Norton stinks and stinks worse year to year.
Their business is antivirus and as such they have now turned to gouging
customers for renewed definition updating. If you are a gamer like my, you
want the most resources free but not compromise on security and viruses
etc.. AVG has been great for me and for all the people I have recommended it
too. I've yet to have anyone tell me this AVG sucks and I got a virus. AVG
is about 10x smaller than Norton and basically covers all aspects of virus
transmission. Oh and AVG doesn't charge you to update your definintions.

Well, I have tried to go to Panda and do a virus scan( the free one) but I
only get so far and it shuts me out- so I cannot even pay forthe product (
this page cannot be displayed). SO... any suggestions? Has my Norton
blocked my access to other sites?

I concur Tom.

Norton and McAfee are hogs. they take large amounts of resources, and
try to do other stuff - which makes them more complicated than they
need be.

Greetings --

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all
without any significant problems.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially
higher than last year's subscription), I decided to try less expensive
solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of GriSoft's
AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ) and the free version
of Sygate's Personal Firewall (
http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php ). Both have proven to be
easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally, and
in partial answer to your question, I was pleasantly surprised to see
a small but very noticeable improvement in my PC's performance, once
I'd replaced the Symantec product.

Obviously don't play games cuz you'd notice a tremendous improvement. Glad
to hear you like AVG. I love it. Lean and mean with viruses. It's not all
splash and graphicy as Norton, but it does the job, thats the most important
thing.
