Windows XP and a HP Lap top randomly locking up....

I am working on a friends system. It is a HP laptop (I am not shure of the
model- but it is running an atholon)
It has Win XP Home on it.

The system randomly locks up. I have tried a clean boot, ran Nortons System
works (including virus scan Finally got this to work) The system still locks
up. I have tried Mcafees, but I have not been able to run it with out the
system locking. This is a HARD LOCK! No mouse, clock stops etc.

There does not seem to be any coorlation with what is being ra, I can even
do alean boot and let the system to sit, and it will lock.
I have used The ultimate troubleshooter to look at things loading and every
thing seems good there.

My next step is to try PC DOC for DOS (I can not get windows to run long
enough to run the Win version)
Since Nortons did not find anything, I don't "think" this is a virus. It
does not do the shut down like I have seen blaster do in the past.
I have removed all non factory hardware (Linksys PC CARD)

Any other ideas?

TIA

Check the logs in the event viewer for error messages. I know how to get
there in XP pro and I'm guessing for home it is the same: Go to control
panel > Administrative Tools > event viewer.
Maybe they give a clue?

I am having the same problem with my farther's laptop runnning xp, having done a complete reinstall and then keeping it off the net to prevent any virus getting near it but the problem is still there. So I would be interested if you solve this
