Windows XP and 98 SE networking problem

I'm having a large amount of trouble with adding an
Windows XP machine to an existing Windows 98 SE network.

-The cables are fine, they worked across the windows 98
network so there's no reason why they wouldn't across an
xp/98 network
-All computers are on the same subnet with the same subnet
mask
-All computers have the most updated drivers for the
network adapters
-All computers have the same protocols installed

Still despite all this, the computers are just refusing to
see each other across the network (I can't even ping
them). If anyone can offer some advice I would appreciate
it.

I'm having the SAME problem. Was eventually able to get
them to ping using IP's but not computer names. Had to
disable firewall and (ICF) internet connection firewall
on XP box adapter for ping to work. On mine the 98se box
can see XP box, but XP cannot see 98. <<<urrrrggggg>>>>
Went through troubleshooter and it tells me I "may" be
using the same computer name as someone else on the
network....NOT! You might try Knowledge Base Article
308007. Didn't help me but may work for you. GOOD LUCK.
By the sounds of posts, your going to need it! kj

Maybe my response to "Gerry Hurley" on 12/17 will help, as
I have the same config and it's working great (finally!)

BTW, I don't know that you need *all* the settings to be
exactly like mine, but it's what is running successfuly
for me.

Hope that helps.

Wow, Hans - there's a *wealth* of information in that
piece of work!

Might you know of a good link to find help configuring
how to share a dialup internet connection between User
Accounts (on the same PC)?

I've read everything i can find in the KB, and I still can
find no specific information as to why my 2nd user can't
browse the net with IE6 or send/receive mail in OE (yet he
can ping yahoo.com just fine.) The primary user has no
such problems. Both users have admin priviledges.

The following gave me a clue, which came from a site other
than MS, but I can't seem to get it set up correctly:

"There is one last step to configuring your XP user
profiles. You have to allow other users on the computer
access to the Internet. XP has a built in feature that
allows you to share the current Internet connection with
other users on the computer or network."

I had no such problems adding ICS and sharing my broadband
connection among several PCs (even mixing Win98 & XPs) but
this will be a off-site system for 3 infrequent users. By
the way, the PC *is* part of a Win98 - XP network now.

Thanks for any suggestions!
