Windows won't shut down on brand new computer

I just bought a new computer this week (HP), and only once have I been able
to get it to shut down properly. Whenever I tell it to shut down, the
computer just stops doing anything. I can move my pointer around and access
the task manager through ctrl-alt-del. . . using the shut down menu from
there gets me one step further (to the shutting down screen), but it still
won't turn off without me doing it manually.
I checked the system events and found the same error occurring whenever I
would try to shut down. Here's the main information:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: DCOM
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10010
Description:
The server {clsid value here} did not register with DCOM within the required
timeout.

I clicked the Microsoft link for more information, and was told to find the
clsid value in the registry, find the value data, and navigate to the program
on my computer to find the vendor that I need to contact.
Here's the problem:
All the value data gives me is CAutoUpdate Class 1.0. I can't find any
information on this anywhere.

Is this the AutoUpdate service for Windows? If so, would disabling the
service in msconfig fix the problem? If I'm completely wrong, does anyone
have any clue as to how I can fix this?

I would use MSCONFIG to disable all items on the Startup
tab EXCEPT the anti-virus settings (then re-boot) and if
that allows the system to shutdown OK after the re-boot,
re-enable the settings one-at-a-time until you figure out
which one is causing the problem.

You may have to force a re-boot after changing the
settings using MSCONFIG.

This is almost certainly a software problem: a program
that is memory-resident is preventing Windows from
shutting down properly.

I ended up doing something similar after posting -- I ended up disabling HP's
AutoUpdate software (which I originally didn't think was the problem because
I would close it before shutting down and still have the problem), and so
far, the computer's shut down properly twice in a row. Hopefully it'll
continue.

I'd already looked at all of those Microsoft ones, and the outside sites
don't seem to be of much more help. . . most of them are referring to the
restart instead of shut down problem, and the one about the hanging doesn't
apply to my situation.

I think I managed to find the program that was causing all of the problems
though, so all is good.
